Every year, our center sees at least 200 new cases of pediatric cancer from all over the country. First and foremost, I would like to extend my heartfelt gratitude to the VIVA Foundation for inviting us to be here. It has been an honor and a privilege to serve as a traveling fellow for the past three years. My name is Yaulia, and I am a paediatrician in Indonesia with an interest in paediatric haematology and oncology. Currently, I am working in the Dharmais National Cancer Centre Hospital of Indonesia in Jakarta. As the name implies, our hospital specifically handles cases of adult and paediatric cancer. In the pediatric field, We also collaborate with all hospitals that handle pediatric cancer and all cancer network hospitals in Indonesia. Currently, some colleagues from Indonesia also present here.\u00a0\r\n\r\nI am very grateful and fortunate to attend this St. Jude VIVA Forum. During these days, this forum and discussion provided me with the opportunity to broaden my knowledge and understand the latest issues and concerns in paediatric cancer treatment. This forum has given me new perspectives and extremely important knowledge. I intend to share this information and expertise with my peers and coworkers through presentations, talks, and training sessions. I believe that by sharing this expertise, I can contribute positively to the healthcare community and help to improve the quality of paediatric cancer care.\r\n\r\nI'd like to convey my heartfelt gratitude to VIVA and the sponsors that made this event possible. This event would not have happened without your active support. A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between VIVA Indonesia and the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Indonesia was signed in the middle of last year. It states that the two organisations will work together to improve the care of children with cancer by means of medical treatment, education, and translational research, beginning with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia (ALL), which is the most prevalent type of cancer in children.\r\n\r\nWe hope this collaboration can proceed well and look forward to tangible results for our pediatric cancer patients. Indonesia is a large country with a population of 281 million people, with children making up 28.9% of that number. Every year, the WHO estimates 400,000 cases, and in 2020, GLOBOCAN projected 12,400 new cases of childhood cancer in Indonesia. Based on a survey of members of the pediatric hematology oncology working group, the Indonesian Pediatrician Association (2024) estimates the discovery of 4,000 new cases per year, with 50% of them successfully recorded and monitored, resulting in a low survival rate of around 24% three-year overall survival. With the vastness of the country and the large population, we in Indonesia face a significant problem of childhood cancer. There is still a lot of empty space that is our collective responsibility. Therefore, we need cooperation and collaboration from all parties, including medical professionals, sponsors, and donors, in helping these children. \u201cHi, I\u2019m Rachel. I\u2019m the mother of Hayden. Hayden is 10 this year.\r\n\r\nHe was diagnosed with stage 4 neuroblastoma about six years ago when he was four years old. We went through a full range of treatments, including surgery, chemotherapy, radiation, and a bone marrow transplant.\r\n\r\nHayden missed about one and a half years of preschool before starting primary school. It was tough for him to catch up, especially with subjects like Chinese. Thankfully, VIVA\u2019s MindChamps tuition programme helped him improve.\r\n\r\nVIVA\u2019s support has been invaluable\u2014not just during diagnosis and treatment, but also through their survivorship programme. We\u2019ve participated in various activities, like a drone-flying event, which was a fun and relaxing break from everything.\r\n\r\nVIVA plays a vital role in supporting families like ours. Raising a child takes a village, and raising a child with cancer requires even more effort, time, and resources. VIVA has been there at every stage\u2014diagnosis, treatment, recovery, and now survivorship.\r\n\r\nThey don\u2019t just support children directly with activities, but also the doctors treating them and the parents through various programmes. The MindChamps programme, in particular, helps children catch up on their studies, which is crucial since they miss a significant part of their education during treatment.\r\n\r\nWhat VIVA is doing is truly amazing. \u201cOne support that I have gathered from VIVA is a programme where they have invited doctors from around the world to come to Singapore to hold a session where they shared about beyond survivorship. This is something that I was not aware of, I did not know there were such implications on survivors. This programme gave me comfort, support and an avenue to go to and allowed me to meet other parents like me, and survivors like my son, Jovan. Thank you Mrs Yeo, I\u2019m so glad that you founded this foundation and help many children like Jovan, who has benefitted so much, directly and indirectly. \u201cHi, my name is Marianne, and my son, Joel Lim, is one of the beneficiaries of the VIVA Foundation.\r\n\r\nHe was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia (ALL) in 2005. We have been on this journey with VIVA for many years and have benefited tremendously from their research collaboration with St. Jude and other medical institutions worldwide.\r\n\r\nThis research has been life-changing for my son, ensuring he received the timely treatment he needed. We are forever grateful for everything VIVA has done for Joel. Their collaboration with top hospitals, including St. Jude, and other leading medical groups has had a significant impact.\r\n\r\nVIVA continues to provide life-saving treatment and financial relief for families, making sure our children receive the best care without the burden of overwhelming costs. I had medulloblastoma when I was 15 years old. For me, the hardest part about being sick was not being able to go out with friends and enjoy things like playing or walking in the mall. I am most happy when participating in events with people that had gone through cancer like me. So far, my favourite programme with VIVA was the Sidecar \u2013 Ride for Hope event. Hi, I\u2019m Ron Tan, 53 years old. I volunteer with VIVA as a photographer, capturing moments from our events and activities. \r\n\r\nI\u2019m a father of three wonderful teenagers, and children\u2019s wellbeing has always been close to my heart. Seeing children struggle with illness is heartbreaking \u2014 it affects their daily lives, limits their opportunities, and places a heavy burden on their parents and caregivers.\r\n\r\nThrough my photography, I hope to give the public a glimpse into the lives and events at VIVA, and to raise awareness of the importance of supporting these children. I see my contribution not as work, but as a meaningful opportunity to give back. \r\n\r\nI first met Sherene Chen and Bastian, the managers of the organisation. They were very friendly and welcoming, which made me feel comfortable right from the start. Later on, I met the rest of the team like Jennifer Yeo and Wong Hao and we connected well.\r\n\r\nEverything was well-organised \u2014 from event details to timing and expectations \u2014 so I could plan my work smoothly. I could sense the dedication and sincerity in the environment. It was a good experience overall, and I felt supported from day one. \r\n\r\nThrough VIVA, I\u2019ve met many caring and positive people. Everyone contributes in their own way, and there\u2019s a strong sense of teamwork and purpose. It\u2019s a small but meaningful community built on compassion and shared values. \r\n\r\nFor me, the biggest reward is seeing the children\u2019s smiles and the joy in their families. Capturing those real, happy moments feels very fulfilling. When I see others enjoying the photos or reliving those memories, that\u2019s already mission accomplished for me.\r\n\r\nVolunteering requires commitment and compassion, but it gives back just as much. Using my time and skills to bring a bit of happiness or awareness to others is already very rewarding.\r\n\r\nThrough my lens, I hope others can see the warmth and life behind every event. I am Maggie Chung Monnier originally from Hong Kong. At VIVA, I serve as a program designer and art teacher. I create art programs that inspire children to discover joy, hope, and love through creativity. In my sessions, I guide them to express their emotions and dreams through watercolor, acrylic painting, and fun handicrafts. Each activity is designed to spark imagination and remind them that even the smallest creative moments can bring comfort, courage, and happiness.\r\n\r\nAs an artist, I always believe that art can speak when words can\u2019t \u2014 it can heal, connect, and bring light to difficult times. A few years ago, during a challenging time in my life, I returned to painting, and it helped me find peace and strength. That experience shaped my mission \u2014 to capture and magnify small moments that bring hope and joy, because even the smallest spark can make a big difference. Supporting VIVA through art allows me to live out that mission by sharing creativity and love with children who are bravely fighting cancer.\r\n\r\nMy first experience with VIVA was during the June 2025 holiday program, themed \u201cSmall Hands, Big Dreams.\u201d I guided the children to imagine their dreams and paint self-portraits of themselves achieving them. They were so open and full of imagination \u2014 we connected instantly. Their paintings were bright, bold, and full of life. Seeing how each child\u2019s small brushstroke could express such strength and hope reminded me how small moments of creativity can make big changes in how we feel and see the world.\r\n\r\nI\u2019ve found a community filled with love, trust, and genuine care. The staff and volunteers are always ready to support one another \u2014 we share the same heart for giving and joy in seeing the children shine. It\u2019s a space where small acts of kindness truly ripple outward, touching everyone involved.\r\n\r\nThe most precious gift I\u2019ve received is friendship \u2014 with the children and their families, the staff and the volunteers. One moment that stays with me is when a child was painting her dream as a crocheter, she described her feeling in the painting with her eyes sparking. She said : \u201cI am happy. I am smiling.\u201d That pure joy touched me deeply. It reminded me that while I came to give, I was also receiving something profound \u2014 joy, courage and inspiration.\r\n\r\nVolunteering is a journey of shared growth. When we create, laugh, and dream together, we inspire each other in ways big and small. Each session with the children is a gentle reminder that small moments \u2014 a smile, a kind word, a shared dream \u2014 can magnify joy and bring real change to our hearts.<\/div>\t\t\t\t\t

Hi! I\u2019m Sin Hui, currently a Year 3 Biomedical Science student at Ngee Ann Polytechnic! I first got to know about VIVA Foundation through my school\u2019s broadcasting channel, where I was introduced to the VIVA St. Jude Forum. I have since volunteered as a Volunteer Coordinator for the Forum and other opportunities, including various Zoom webinars and the Children\u2019s Day\u2013Mid-Autumn Festival event this year.\r\n\r\nVIVA Foundation\u2019s mission to raise awareness of paediatric cancer and education about treating childhood cancers deeply resonated with me. I found it extremely meaningful to be part of a cause that helps share knowledge and improve access to cancer treatments, ultimately contributing to better outcomes for children with cancer.\r\n\r\nMy first volunteering experience was with the VIVA Forum Sponsorship team this year. As it was our first time approaching sponsors and creating the Forum\u2019s sponsorship booklet, my team and I faced quite a few challenges initially. However, with the VIVA team\u2019s constant guidance and encouragement, we learned and grew together through the process. It was a fulfilling experience that strengthened our confidence and teamwork. \r\n\r\nThrough my volunteer experiences with VIVA Foundation, I\u2019ve developed a strong sense of empathy, teamwork, and purpose. I\u2019ve met many like-minded and kind-hearted individuals \u2014 both students and mentors \u2014 who\u2019ve inspired me in countless ways. Each volunteer brought their own unique strengths, and together, we formed a warm and supportive community that truly embodies the spirit of giving back.\r\n\r\nOne of the most rewarding aspects has been the people I\u2019ve met along the way. I\u2019m very grateful to be part of such a joyous and dedicated community. Seeing each event come to life after everyone\u2019s hard work is incredibly heart-warming. And it\u2019s in these moments that I truly appreciate how much collective effort and passion goes into making a difference.\r\n\r\nVolunteering with VIVA has been mutually enriching as it creates a space for learning and connection on both sides. As a volunteer, I get to bring joy, support and awareness to the beneficiaries, but I have also gained valuable insights from them, their journeys, empathy and inspiration from their strength and resilience. Each project reminds me how small contributions can lead to a great and meaningful cause.<\/div>\t\t\t\t\t
